Virex® Virus Update 11_01_97 is part of Dr Solomon's ongoing commitment to deliver the best virus protection available. We have updated Virex to the most recent and complete set of virus definitions as of November 1, 1997. This update detects and removes 25 new Macro viruses, and will update you Virex definitions version to 10/27/97.
VIREX MEMORY EXPANDER 1.0
Due to the memory requirements of macro virus detection and repair, your copy of Virex may not have sufficient memory to install or use this update. Virex Memory Expander 1.0 is an update utility that increases the memory requirements of the Virex Application and Control Panel. This enables Virex to load recent virus update files that contain a large quantity of macro virus definitions. Virex Memory Expander 1.0 works only with Virex versions 5.6 through 5.7.1.
It is not necessary to apply the Virex Memory Expander to Virex version 5.8.
If you have previously applied the Virex Memory Expander 1.0 to your copy of Virex, you do not need to repeat this process with each new Virex Virus Update unless you reinstall Virex. The Memory Expander is still available for download from the Datawatch website at www.datawatch.com.
INSTALLING THIS UPDATE
To install this Virex Virus Update:
• IMPORTANT - If you have not already done so, please follow the instructions above to apply the Virex Memory Expander before installing this update.
• Double-click on the Virex Virus Update file. The Virex application will launch, presenting the following dialog:
• Click the “Update” button.
• If you have Virex 5.5.4 or earlier, dialogs similar to the following may appear for some virus definitions:
• If you are presented with a dialog similar to the above, click on "Replace".
• Diagnose or Repair your system after installation to ensure it is free of the new viruses.
IF YOU HAVE VIREX 5.6.8 OR EARLIER ...
Under certain conditions, the “Scan Files When Opened” feature of the Virex Control Panel (version 5.6.8 and earlier) is unable to detect macro viruses in documents opened in Word or Excel. If you have Virex 5.6.8 or earlier, you should not depend on this feature to detect Word/Excel macro viruses. We suggest upgrading your copy of Virex. You can also scan these documents with one of Virex's many other automatic or manual scanning features. Virex (version 5.7 and later) is still the only Macintosh anti-virus product that detects and repairs infected documents before they are opened in Word and Excel.

VIREX 5.8 INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING NEW FEATURES:
ZIP Archive Scanning - Virex now scans the contents of ZIP archives, the most prevalent PC compression format.
Contextual Menu Plug-In Module - Adds a "Scan with Virex" item to the Contextual Menu of Mac OS 8 (or System 7.6.1 with Apple's contextual menu extension). Scan any file, folder, or volume by control-clicking its Finder icon.
Interface Enhancements - The Virex application has an improved report format, report filtering, pop-up menus for report handling, and "date stamp" identification of the installed Virus Definitions. Virex now has the Mac OS 8 "platinum" appearance, too.
VIREX VERSION HISTORY
To ensure superior protection against the rapid proliferation of new Macro viruses, Dr Solomon's Software is now publishing monthly Virex Virus Update files. These virus updates will also be incorporated into each new release of the Virex product. However, new versions of Virex are not always released at the time of each update. Even if you have the latest version of Virex, be sure you have also installed the latest update file.
